As the year draws to a close, I’ve taken time to reflect on my journey as an events and arts photographer in 2024. This year has been a whirlwind of unforgettable moments, creative communities, and powerful storytelling. To celebrate, I’ve curated my 12 favourite images—each one a snapshot of the unique, vibrant scenes I’ve been privileged to capture.
Photography, for me, is about more than just documenting events; it’s about finding the magic in unexpected places. It’s about freezing those fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. From lantern parades to live music, circus performances to skateboarding culture, and the raw beauty of alternative weddings, this year has been a testament to the power of creativity and connection.
Lantern Parades: The Glow of Community Spirit
Lantern parades hold a special place in my heart. There’s something magical about capturing a procession of glowing creations weaving their way through dark streets, surrounded by a community brought together by light. One of my favourite images this year came from the Fishguard Lantern Parade, where two artists chatted casually while their handmade owl lantern gazed straight into my lens. It’s moments like this—quiet, candid, yet full of personality—that make this work so rewarding.
The Energy of Live Music
From intimate gigs in tiny venues to open-air festivals, 2024 has been filled with incredible live music moments. Capturing the energy of a performer mid-song or the crowd losing themselves to the rhythm is a challenge I never tire of. It’s not just about the big moments on stage but the quiet ones too—an artist tuning their guitar, a fan leaning against the barrier, totally lost in the music.
The Circus: Defying Gravity
The circus is another world entirely—gravity-defying stunts, vivid costumes, and a sense of wonder that’s hard to match. This year, I found myself drawn to capturing the moments in between: a performer adjusting their costume before stepping into the spotlight or the laughter of children watching from the crowd. These slices of humanity make the spectacle even more profound.
Skateboarding: The Art of Rebellion
Skateboarding is raw, unpredictable, and full of character. Whether it’s a mid-air trick, the camaraderie between skaters, or the bold graffiti backdrops, there’s so much life in these scenes.
Alternative Weddings: Celebrating Unconventional Love
This year, I’ve been privileged to photograph couples who said no to tradition and yes to celebrating their love in their own way. From glitter-covered jackets to intimate elopements on rugged cliffs, these weddings have been a joy to document. My goal is always to capture not just the event but the emotions—the laughter, tears, and everything in between.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As I reflect on these 12 images, I’m filled with gratitude for the communities and creatives who’ve trusted me to tell their stories. Each shot reminds me why I do what I do: to capture the extraordinary in the every day and to celebrate moments that others might not see.
